Born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of a pioneer heart surgeon, Dr. Lam has always dreamed of practicing medicine, but primary care offered more appeal to him. The Sandhills Family Health Center was established by Dr. Lam in 1979 and grew with an emphasis on pediatrics and comprehensive care for entire families. In 1995, Dr. Lam became one of the first employed physicians in the FirstHealth primary care network, and his practice was moved to its present location. Dr. Lam has been active in numerous physician leadership positions. In September, 2003, Dr. Lam and his associates re-joined the ranks of private practice with their new practice name. Married to Robyn Gephart Lam since 1972, the Lams have three children: Christopher, an attorney in Charlotte; Jeffrey, an attorney in Miami; and Juliet, employed in marketing. Dr. Lam enjoys his grand-daughter (Caroline), golf (usually), and is an avid fan of Duke basketball. He has volunteered as a mentor with Moore Buddies.
